Here’s a number that stopped me cold:
47%.
That’s the percentage of fertility clients I see who are eating what they think is a ‘perfect’ diet, and it’s actually working AGAINST their hormones.
Not neutral. Not suboptimal. Actively counterproductive.
Does that sound a bit dramatic? Maybe. But when you’ve been trying for months (or years), and you’re doing "all the right things," only to see another negative test, the truth is the most supportive thing I can give you.
Overnight oats for breakfast? That’s often 40g of carbs before 9am with zero protein balance, spiking your insulin before your body’s even had a chance to blink, let alone regulate.
‘Healthy’ green smoothies? They can be loaded with oxalates that interfere with mineral absorption, potentially robbing your body of the very nutrients your eggs need to thrive.
Salmon and quinoa for dinner every night? You might be missing the specific saturated fats your hormones literally need to be built from.
These women aren’t eating junk, darlings. They’re eating what they’ve been told is ‘healthy’ by a fitness industry that wasn't designed for a woman over 35 trying to conceive. They are eating for a beach body, but they need to be eating for a baby body.
And it’s quietly sabotaging their fertility.
Let me explain how, and more importantly, what we are going to do about it. Welcome to Issue #1 of The Fertility Files. Let’s get real about your plate.

STOP EATING FOR 'HEALTH.' START EATING FOR FERTILITY.
When we hit 35, 40, or even 45, our bodies become much more sensitive to the "noise" of our lifestyle. Our hormonal margin for error gets a little slimmer. I work with so many fierce ladies who are stuck in "all or nothing" patterns, either they are "perfectly" clean eating or they've "failed" and are back to square one.
If you want to look after "future you" now, we have to shift the focus from restriction to abundance and alignment.
Step 1: Balance Your Breakfast
Your first meal sets your hormonal tone for the entire day. If you start with a sugar spike (yes, even from "healthy" fruit smoothies or honey-drizzled oats), you are triggering an insulin response that tells your ovaries to take a backseat.
Stable blood sugar = stable insulin = better hormone signalling all day.
- ❌ The Old Way: Overnight oats, fruit smoothies, cereal, or just a piece of toast.
- ✅ The Fertility Way: A powerful combo of Protein + Healthy Fat + Complex Carb.
My favourite fertility-fire starters:
- 2 pasture-raised eggs + half an avocado + a spoonful of sauerkraut (for that gut health, queen!).
- Full-fat Greek yoghurt + a handful of raspberries + a sprinkle of pumpkin seeds.
- Smoked salmon + rye bread + a generous schmear of cream cheese.

Step 2: Eat Enough (I’m serious!)
This is the one that shocks most of my clients. Many women over 35 are chronically UNDEREATING. If you’ve spent years on "health kicks" or calorie-counting apps, your body might be stuck in a state of perceived famine.
Your ovaries are high-energy organs. They need fuel to produce quality eggs. If you are in a constant calorie deficit, your body prioritises survival (heart, lungs, brain) over reproduction.
- ❌ The Old Way: 1,400–1,600 calories, salad-only lunches, skipping snacks to "be good."
- ✅ The Fertility Way: 1,800–2,200 calories (this varies, of course), with protein at every single meal.
We want to signal abundance to your nervous system. We want your body to feel so safe and well-resourced that it says, "Yes, this is a wonderful environment to grow a human." If you're feeling stuck, the real cost of staying in this restrictive cycle is more than just hunger, it's your fertility potential.
Step 3: Prioritise Fat (The Super Healthy Kind)
I know, I know. We’ve been told for decades that fat is the enemy. But here is the "scoop": Your hormones are literally built from fat.
Cholesterol is the precursor to every sex hormone you produce. Without enough of the right fats, your body can’t make the progesterone, oestrogen, or testosterone you need for a healthy cycle. And for so many women over 35, this does not mean living on low-fat everything and dry chicken salads.
- ❌ The Old Way: Low-fat yoghurt, skimmed milk, skinless chicken breast, and only using a tiny drop of oil because you’re scared of calories.
- ✅ The Fertility Way: Generous olive oil, avocado, nuts, seeds, tahini, olives, and lean proteins like salmon, chicken, turkey, tofu, or Greek yoghurt to create meals that actually support hormone production and keep blood sugar steadier too.
Think: a big salad with chicken, avocado, pumpkin seeds, and olive oil dressing. Or salmon with roasted veg and a tahini drizzle. Or Greek yoghurt with chia, walnuts, and berries. That is what hormone-supportive eating can look like in real life.

And yes, foods like egg yolks, full-fat dairy, butter, or red meat can still have a place for some women, but they are just one option in the bigger picture, not the whole strategy. The main point? Stop fearing fat and start giving your body the nourishing building blocks it has been asking for. When we work together on hormone balancing through nutrition, this is often the "lightbulb moment" where my clients finally start to feel their energy (and their libido!) return.
Step 4: Choose Resistance Training Over Endless Cardio
This is the step so many women miss, especially if they’ve been taught that the answer is just to do more spinning, more running, and more calorie-burning. But after 35, your body often responds far better to strength training than chronic cardio when it comes to fertility support.
Why? Because resistance training helps improve insulin sensitivity, which matters hugely for hormone balance, egg quality, and conditions like PCOS. It also helps you build and protect muscle mass, which naturally declines as we age and plays a big role in metabolic health.
And here’s the bit I really want you to hear: strength training sends your body a signal of safety and abundance. It says, "We are strong, supported, and well-resourced." Chronic, high-volume cardio can sometimes do the opposite, especially when you’re under-eating or already stressed. It can push the body further into a stress response, and that is not the message we want your hormones receiving.
- ❌ The Old Way: Long cardio sessions, daily HIIT, and measuring your workouts only by how sweaty or shattered you feel after.
- ✅ The Fertility Way: Resistance-focused movement like dumbbell work, bodyweight squats, lunges, rows, Pilates-style strength work, or resistance band sessions a few times a week.
HIIT is not "bad," by the way. In moderation, it can absolutely have a place, especially if you enjoy it. But the foundation I want for you is strength first, cardio second.

This is Just the Tip of the Iceberg…
